Thursday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

On an unusually busy Thursday night in the Evo-Stik League Premier, Altrincham took a big step towards claiming the title with a 2-1 win at Sheerien Park against play-off chasing Shaw Lane AFC.

Altrincham took the lead 5 minutes before half-time when John Johnston finished well at the far post.

But the Ducks grabbed an equaliser 2 minutes before half-time from the penalty spot after Godwin Abadaki had been fouled in the box and former Alty favourite Damian Reeves converted the resulting spot-kick

However, the visitors` winner came 5 minutes from time when Josh Hancock netted from close range to leave Altrincham requiring one more point to claim the title due to their goal difference being so good.

Grantham Town gave themselves a chance of finishing second with an emphatic 5-1 win at the Turnbull Ground against Whitby Town.

The Gingerbreads took the lead after 12 minutes when Danny Meadows` shot looped into the back of the net.

Whitby levelled on 25 minutes through Junior Mondal’s curling effort.

But the visitors re-took the lead though on 50 minutes through Jordan Hempenstall and on 73 minutes, it was 3-1 when Sam Osborne was played through on goal to slot home.

It became 4-1 on 85 minutes with a simple second for Hempenstall, and in stoppage time, sub Andy Wright made it 5-1 from six-yards.

Witton Albion`s top five hopes took a blow when they could only manage a 2-2 draw at the Marine Travel Arena against Marine AFC.

However, the result paled into insignificance due to a nasty injury to Witton`s Nick Ryan, who suffered a treble fibula and a tibia break.

Rob Hopley had broken the deadlock to give Albion a 56th minute lead which James Murray cancelled out 9 minutes later.

Steven Tames looked as though he`d won it for Albion with a 90th minute second, only for James Short to grab the Mariners` equaliser in stoppage time to leave the visitors eight points adrift of the play-off places with twelve points left to play for.

Matlock Town beat Stalybridge Celtic 2-0 at Causeway Lane, thanks to Chris Ondong-Mba after 67 minutes and Harry Wood 4 minutes later, while Buxton overcame Nantwich Town 3-0 at Silverlands.

Liam Hardy after 38 and then 86 minutes from the spot sandwiched a 49th minute Josh Meade effort.

Hednesford Town and Rushall Olympic shared a 1-1 Keys Park draw in the evening`s other game – Reece King`s 57th minute opener for the Pitmen being cancelled out by Danny Waldron 10 minutes from time.
