In Evo-Stik NPL First Division South on Tuesday night top met bottom at Ashby Avenue, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And in the shock result of the night, and arguably the season so far, bottom triumphed!

Lincoln United couldn't dislodge Coalville Town from top spot but did hoist themselves off the bottom with a surprise 2-1 win against the high-flying Ravens.

Home fans could be forgiven for being a little apprehensive before kick-off as Coalville had rammed nine past Hucknall Town last Saturday and six the previous game against Mickleover Sports.

But it took 71 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, and it was Coalville`s Jerome Murdock who was on target. The expected onslaught never occurred, however, and just four minutes later Brendan McDaid was on hand to head home following a corner.

And in the 81st minute a repeat performance saw McDaid win another brave header and Sean Wright bundle the ball home to give United a deserved three points and a third victory in October.

Coalville's disappointment was tempered somewhat by the news that second-placed King's Lynn Town had been held at The Walks by Gresley FC.

But it could have been worse for Lynn as a brace from Rob Spencer in the 37th and 47th minute saw the Moatmen lead 2-0. The crowd of 561 saw Russ Dunkley reduce the arrears in the 72nd minute and then Danny Beaumont equalised with nine minutes remaining.

Goals from Luke Smithson and Adam Kimberley saw Carlton Town win for the third time in a week, this time 2-1 at third-placed Stamford AFC.

Smithson struck midway through a first half dominated by the Millers when his angled drive found the corner of the net. And although Stamford fought back to equalise through Michael Jacklin 10 minutes from time, it was Kimberley who had the final say, when his shot from outside the box took a deflection on its way into the net. The win moves the Millers up to seventh in the table.

Northwich Victoria moved into fifth spot after they held on to John Hardiker's ninth minute goal to take all three points away from Kidsgrove Athletic.

Level on points with Vics and in sixth spot now are Market Drayton Town after they won by the same scoreline at The Scholars against Chasetown. Shaun Humphreys was the Shropshire side's hero in the 57th minute.

Struggling Leek Town rescued a point from the trip to The Grove as they came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Halesowen Town.

The Blues found themselves two goals down at half-time to efforts from Ben smith after five minutes and Ben Haseley half-an-hour later. But Peter Wright bagged a brace in the 70th and 75th minutes to earn a valuable point for the visitors.

Bottom-markers Hucknall Town's woes continue after they went down to a 3-2 Watnall Road defeat to Sutton Coldfield Town.

Luke Chapman put the visitors ahead after 18 minutes, but Alex Ford equalised on the half-hour mark. Ford then scored his second to give the Yellows a 51t minute lead, but Kristian Ramsey-Dickson levelled six minutes later and then scored what proved to be the winner with 19 minutes left.

Belper Town's recent improved form continued with a 2-1 success at the Lyme Valley Stadium against Newcastle Town, who found themselves a goal down inside two minutes to a Simon Harrison strike.

Shaun Tuton then gave the Nailers a 2-0 lead just after the break, and although Tom France reduced the deficit on 68 minutes, Castle were unable to find a leveller.

Another side in need of points at the bottom end of the table, Mickleover Sports, had to be content with one from a 1-1 home draw with Loughborough Dynamo, whose Dominic Brennan cancelled out Alex Steadman's 16th minute opener with only 13 minutes remaining.
