Leek Town returned to second place in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's First Division South table – four points behind leaders Halesowen Town with two games in hand – and at the same time ended Chasetown’s slim chances of the play-offs after ending the Scholars unbeaten run with a 3-1 success on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.
Leek, who beat Chasetown 3-0 in the return match in December, showed why they are still very much in the title race with a disciplined defensive performance which saw them edge ahead on the half-hour mark when Tim Grice netted at the near post.
Chasetown deservedly equalised six minutes later though when Simon Brown drove a low shot between the legs of Leek full-back Dan Smith and beyond the left hand of Ben Chapman.
Chasetown’s hopes were dealt a blow when Brown was sent off soon afterwards for a second yellow. With the man advantage, Leek took a stranglehold on the game, Jordan Johnson restoring their lead on 65 minutes. And Johnson sealed the three points nine minutes from time with a sumptuous free-kick from 30 yards which curled beyond the grasp of Ryan Price.
Despite being reduced to ten-men, Gresley FC showed grit and determination to claim their third `double` of the season at Sheffield FC with a 3-1 success.
Alex Steadman gave the Moatmen the lead a minute before the break. But on 68 minutes Club were awarded a contentious penalty, Andy Gascoigne converting. But the ten-men rallied to retake the lead three minutes from time through Eric Graves and confirm victory through Zubusiso Nyatito in injury-time.
