Tuesday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

In the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South on Tuesday night Basford United moved into fourth place in the table after a 2-0 home win over fellow play-off contenders Chasetown, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Basford had to dig deep for this and as play flowed from end to end, the home side took the lead on 25 minutes when Corey Grantham's header came back off the bar and Rob Darkin fired in the rebound.

Basford had to withstand a severe examination of their defence in the second half and had their crossbar rattled by Ryan Winter's header. But 11 minutes from time a second goal from Ruben Wiggins-Thomas settled the game.

Leek Town moved up to ninth in the table following a 2-0 victory at Sheffield FC.

Tim Grice fired the visitors in front when he headed home on 38 minutes. Grice then added his second of the night in the 73rd minute – his 20th of the season to date.

Two goals in the last 10 minutes from Anthony Dwyer earned Carlton Town a 2-1 comeback win at Market Drayton Town.

The first half had been a fairly even affair and Drayton struck first on 24 minutes when Cohen Brammall fired into the corner of the net.

Just as it looked as if the Millers were once again going to return to Nottingham empty handed, Dwyer popped up to equalise on 80 minutes and then two minutes later scored what proved to be the winner.

Kidsgrove Athletic`s play-off hopes took a blow when they went down 3-1 at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Spencer Maw gave the hosts a 17th minute lead that Anthony Malbon cancelled out after 36 minutes. But 20 minutes from time Adam Hinchciffe restored Steels` lead and Harrison Biggins made sure with a third in stoppage time.

Bottom-markers Tividale went down to a seventeenth defeat of the season at The Moat against Gresley FC.

Jack Langston put the Moatmen in front after 32 minutes and a minute before Gary Ricketts doubled their advantage a minute before the break. Chris Sterling replied four minutes after the interval but the home side held on for three points.
