South Shields lead the table by five points after almost condemning Goole AFC to bottom spot following a 3-1 win at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.
On a murky, misty evening, Shields were made to really battle hard by a Vikings` side in desperate need of points. And they led at half-time, thanks to a 35th minute John Lock effort.
Five minutes into the second half though, Lee Mason equalised and then four minutes later gave the title-chasers the lead. Dan Lowther then ensured the points went north with a third with five minutes to go.
Hyde United remain in contention in second after a 2-1 win at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium against lower mid-table Ramsbottom United.
Elliot Rokka settled early Tigers` nerves with a fifth minute opener. Jerome Wright pulled Rammy level though after 16 minutes but a Max Leonard penalty eight on half-time eventually saw the points go to the visitors.
Scarborough Athletic remain just a point behind Hyde after a 3-1 success at Stainton Park against third-bottom Radcliffe FC.
The visitors had to come back from conceding a 16th minute Kingsley Williams goal but just three minutes later Nathan Valentine equalised. Michael Coulson gave Scarborough the lead after 67 minutes and James Walshaw made sure of the points with a third in the 74th minute.
Bamber Bridge and Prescot Cables are fourth and fifth respectively and also won on Tuesday.
Brig virtually killed off Clitheroe`s own top six hopes with a 2-1 Irongate win, thanks to Ali Waddecar after 54 minutes and Lewis Nightingale three minutes later – all after Ian Rowlands had given the Blues a 26th minute lead.
Cables beat Kendal Town 2-0 at Valerie Park, courtesy of Michael Monaghan after 34 minutes and then Chris Almond five minutes from the end.
Colwyn Bay moved to within a point of the play-off places after edging out Ossett Town 1-0 at Llanelian Road, Astley Mulholland`s goal after 24 minutes proving enough in the end for the Welsh side.
Colne's top six hopes also improved and they are two points adrift of Bay, having played a game more though, after recording a 2-1 win at the Butcher`s Arms against Droylsden.
Sefton Gonzales gave the Bloods a 22nd minute lead that Alex Curran eventually levelled 10 minutes after the break, with Gary Stopforth grabbing the Lancastrians` winner in the last minute of normal time.
