Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans emerged from Tuesday night`s matches as the only team in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division with their 100 per cent record still intact, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Spartans enjoyed a good 2-0 win at Hurst Cross against a previously unbeaten Ashton United outfit, Michael Richardson giving Tom Wade`s visitors a 12th minute lead that Matthew Wade doubled after 33 minutes.

Skelmersdale United went into their game at Silverlands against Buxton with a 100 per cent record but it ended with a first defeat of the campaign after the Bucks won 2-1.

Warren Burrell had the home side in front after 14 minutes, only for Danny Mitchley to pull Tommy Lawson`s side back on level terms 10 minutes later. But Buxton won it on 66 minutes when Liam Hardy converted from the penalty spot to make it three wins from their opening four matches.

Rushall Olympic went into Tuesday`s match at Dales Lane against Matlock Town with an unbeaten record but finished as the losers by the odd goal in five.

Joel Purkiss put the Gladiators ahead after 14 minutes and Niall McManus doubled their lead six minutes later. The Pics then battled back to level the score with a brace from Luke Benbow after 26 and 53 minutes.

But just two minutes after pulling back on terms, substitute Nathan Forbes restored Matlock`s lead – a lead they held helped in no small way by the late dismissal of Rushall centre-back Jack Duggan.

Newly-promoted Salford City are still unbeaten, although they had to be content with a point from a 2-2 Moor Lane draw with relegated Colwyn Bay.

A crowd of 461 saw Danny Webber give the Ammies a 17th minute lead with a fine finish. Jordan Hulme then took the hosts two ahead with a powerful header seven minutes before the break.

But the battling visitors bounced back, reducing the arrears through Archie Love with 14 minutes to go and then pulling back on level terms seven minutes later with Chris Sharp the scorer.

However, Salford almost grabbed a late winner when Matthew Chadwick`s header bounced back off the crossbar.

Nantwich Town made it 15 goals from their opening four matches after beating promoted Sutton Coldfield Town 4-1 at the Weaver Stadium.

The Royals have yet to taste victory in the Premier Division, but took a crucial lead right on the stroke of half-time through former AFC Telford United and Hednesford Town striker Phil Trainer.

But just two minutes after the restart Josh Hancock equalised and two more goals in a minute from Steve Jones and then Matty Kosylo lifted the Dabbers into a 3-1 lead that Elliot Osborne added to 15 minutes from time.

Luke Hinsley and Royale Johnson scored a goal each as Frickley Athletic recorded their first win of the season against Mickleover Sports.

Hinsley headed in a 38th minute opener with Johnson sealing the win in the 82nd minute after coming off the bench.

Stamford AFC also recorded their first win of 2015-16 with a 3-1 success at The Grove against Halesowen Town, who won their opening fixture against Colwyn Bay but have now lost three on the spin.

Gregg Smith put the Daniels in front after 16 minutes and Cameron Powell added a second five minutes later – a lead they held until half-time. Powell then scored his second and Stamford`s third on 58 minutes, with the Yeltz replying seven minutes after that.

Another first-time winner on Tuesday night was Workington AFC, who won the `A66 derby` against Darlington 1883 2-1 in front of a crowd of 684 at Borough Park.

It was the first encounter between the two sides - given the fact that the Quakers are now in a different guise - for 40 years.

The game burst into life with two goals in a minute, starting in the 15th when Connor Tinnion gave the Reds the lead from a tight angle. Graeme Armstrong immediately equalised with a header from a corner. And a draw looked on the cards until, with six minutes remaining, Tinnion scored his second with a superb strike from 25 yards.

Grantham Town are still seeking their first win of the season after losing 3-1 at Barwell.

Lee Ndlovu's fourth goal of the season on 49 minutes cancelled out Iyseden Christie's headed opener for Barwell after 31 minutes. Grantham were level for just two minutes when Richard Lavery headed home from a corner to restore Barwell`s lead.

With ten-man Grantham chasing the game after substitute Brad McGowan was sent off in the 70th minute, Barwell wrapped things up in the final minute with a goal from Brady Hickey.
