Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Darlington 1883 returned to the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division table after a comprehensive 4-0 win over Workington AFC, while overnight leaders Blyth Spartans were held at home, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 1,051 at Heritage Park, the Quakers were ahead inside eight minutes through Lee Gaskell. Nathan Cartman doubled that lead six minutes before the break and then on 65 minutes former Ramsbottom United striker Gaskell added his second and Darlington`s third. Leon Scott made it 4-0 in the final minute.

Spartans were held to a 1-1 draw at Croft Park by inconsistent Ashton United, meaning they were overtaken at the summit by their north-east rivals on goal difference.

A crowd of 525 saw Gary Gee give the visitors a 13th minute lead that Sean Reid eventually cancelled out on the hour-mark.

Nantwich Town are three points back in third after winning 1-0 at Coles Lane against a Sutton Coldfield Town side for whom this was a third successive defeat.

It looked like heading for deadlock until Lewis Short popped up with an 88th minute winner for the Dabbers.

Salford City are fourth, having played two or three games less than the others in the top five.

The Ammies won a best-of-five game at Colwyn Bay, thanks to a last-gasp Danny Webber effort. Jamie Poole gave the visitors a 12th minute lead that Luke Denson equalised 12 minutes later.

But just 2 minutes later Salford were back in front with a second for Poole, only for new signing Lloyd Ellams to pull the hosts` back on level terms five minutes before half-time. That looked like being it until former Manchester United striker Webber grabbed the Ammies` winner in stoppage time.

Ramsbottom United are finally off the mark for the season, earning a first win under new management with a comfortable 4-1 victory over second-bottom Whitby Town at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium.

Jack Tuohy gave Rammy an early boost with a 6th minute opener that Alex Meaney doubled on the half-hour mark. Sam Grimshaw made it 3-0 with five minutes of the second half gone, and although Michael Roberts reduced the arrears from the penalty spot after 65 minutes, Tuohy`s second nine minutes later confirmed a first win at the fourteenth attempt.

That win was also bad news for fellow strugglers Stamford AFC and Grantham Town, who both lost on the night.

The Daniels lost 2-1 at the Zeeco Stadium to Halesowen Town, whose Danny Bragoli broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half. Shawn Richards equalised just past the hour-mark but Jean-Michael Guyes won it for the Yeltz in the 74th minute.

The Gingerbreads found themselves three-down in the first 20 minutes against Barwell before going on to lose 5-0.

Grantham got off to the worst possible start when Sam Purcicoe headed into his own net after just two minutes. Cameran Powell put Barwell 2-0 up after six minutes and it was 3-0 after 17 minutes when Alex Tomkinson netted.

Two second half goals from Brad Hickey on 66 and 70 minutes completed the comprehensive win for the Yellows to set them up nicely for their Emirates FA Cup tie at home to AFC Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Marine AFC went down to a 3-2 defeat at home to Hyde United, who are now eleventh.

Sam Fitton bagged a brace for the Tigers in the fifth and 15th minutes to give the visitors a great start. Sometimes 2-0 leads can be dangerous, and so it proved for Hyde as the Mariners pulled level with two goals in two minutes just past the hour-mark from Luke Holden and Danny Mitchley. But top scorer Scott Spencer grabbed Hyde`s winner in the first seconds of injury-time.

John Cyrus headed in a 59th minute winner as Frickley Athletic ran out 1-0 winners at Mickleover Sports while Skelmersdale United were the evening`s other winners, 2-1 victors at Stormy Corner against Buxton.

Ged Kinsella gave the home side the boost of an early fourth minute lead that Tom Ince doubled on 36 minutes. Niall Doran reduced the deficit just before half-time but the second period remained goalless to give Skem the points.
