Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

It was a big Tuesday night in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's top flight with Blyth Spartans' lead at the top of the table cut to five points by second-placed Workington AFC, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Workington made it ten wins from eleven games in front of a 774 crowd at Borough Park.

But it wasn`t until 15 minutes from time when the breakthrough came - Jake Simpson hitting a wonderful strike from 35 yards. Nine minutes later and it was all over, the Reds doubling their lead as Scott Allison shot went in off the keeper's shoulder.

Third-placed Salford City remain just a point behind Workington after a comfortable 4-0 win at Moor Lane in front of a crowd of 551 against bottom-markers Ramsbottom United.

With the Ammies` management duo and several of their players being former Rammy employees, there was an extra edge to the game which was all over bar the shouting at halt-time with Salford three-up.

Richie Allen scored a brace after four and 34 minutes before Gareth Seddon made 3-0 just four minutes before the break. Former Chorley forward Josh Hine completed the scoring seven minutes from time.

Darlington 1883 slipped into fourth spot after a 3-1 win against mid-table Buxton at Heritage Park in front of a crowd of 857.

The Quakers trailed 1-0 to a 49th minute Liam Hardy effort but swiftly equalised with Terry Galbraith’s free-kick being converted by Lee Gaskell.

Another Galbraith set-piece saw Nathan Cartman take the home side into a 62nd minute lead and then Galbraith himself added the third with seven minutes remaining.

Matlock Town beat Grantham Town by the same scoreline at Causeway Lane.

Laurie Wilson put the Gladiators in front after 25 minutes but less than a minute later the Gingerbreads were back on level terms through Jamie McGhee. Five minutes after half-time Joel Purkiss restored the home side`s lead and Nick Travis added to it on 63 minutes.

Two copycat goals from young striker Max Hazeldine in the space of 50 seconds were sufficient to give Skelmersdale United all three points at home to Hyde United.

The 18-year-old, who is on loan from Accrington Stanley, was put straight through the middle of the visiting defence twice and twice he left them floundering in his wake before confidently finding the net in the 19th and 20th minutes.

Hyde were left chasing a game that was just too much for them but they did manage to make the final nine minutes a little nervy when James Burke pulled one back.
