However, Spartans were grateful to a late penalty save from Adam McHugh and a last-gasp Chris Bell header off the line to preserve their advantage.
Matty Pattison had put Spartans ahead from the spot in the 65th minute after Daniel Maguire had been brought down. But they had goalkeeper McHugh to thank for keeping out Danny Mitchley’s spot-kick in added time, and then Bell`s headed clearance.

North-east rivals Whitby Town are now fourth after inflicting a third defeat in four on Ilkeston FC at the Turnbull Ground.
Dale Hopson gave the Seasiders the lead on the half-hour mark. But they held that lead for only three minutes as Rory Coleman equalised. Matty Tymon's second for Whitby right on the stroke of half-time eventually proved enough to take all three points.
Bottom-markers Frickley Athletic finally managed to break their duck and picked up a first point of the season at home against Workington AFC.
And they did so, despite having Bailey Gooda dismissed shortly after half-time. Frickley were leading through Tom Guest`s eighth minute effort prior to Gooda`s straight red card.
Joe McGhee eventually pulled the Reds back on level terms just past the hour-mark and then David Symington looked to have won it for the visitors when he made it 2-1 with less than nine minutes remaining. But Macauley Parkinson popped up with the ten-men`s equaliser in stoppage time.
