Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

After an almost full fixture list of matches in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division on Tuesday night, Buxton increased their lead at the top of the table to two points by beating Corby Town at Silverlands, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitn

Despite being on top for the majority of the game, the Bucks had to settle for a single goal from Jamie Jackson after 64 minutes to secure victory.

Defeat, and results elsewhere, saw the Steelmen – relegated from National League North at the end of last season – remain in the relegation zone.

Blyth Spartans, beaten by Corby last weekend, shared a goalless draw with fellow North East promotion contenders Spennymoor Town but it at least ended their three-game run without a win, although it cost them second spot.

It was new manager Alun Armstrong’s first match in charge of Spartans and he saw both sides have their chances to win the game.

Blyth lost second spot to another North East outfit, Whitby Town, who beat Ashton United 2-1 at the Turnbull Ground.

Dave McTiernan gave the Seasiders a 20th minute lead that Matty Tymon doubled six minutes before half-time. Ashton `won` the second half, courtesy of a goal seven minutes in from caretaker boss Jody Banim but they were unable to find a leveller.

Rushall Olympic are sixth, level on points with Spennymoor, after beating Barwell 3-1 at Dales Lane.

Alex Reid gave the Pics an early ninth minute lead that Sam Whittall added to on the half-hour mark. Stanley Mugisha made it game over with number three in the 63rd minute, with Declan Towers giving the Canaries a consolation goal 18 minutes from the end.

Sutton Coldfield Town and Skelmersdale United remain in the bottom four with just a single win each to date after both lost 1-0 on Tuesday.

The Royals were beaten by Marine AFC at the Marine Travel Arena, courtesy of a 43rd minute Danny Mitchley effort, while Skem lost at home to Workington AFC, whose Dave Symington won the points in the 22nd minute.

Promoted Warrington Town failed to make it into the top five after losing a best-of-five encounter at the Drivers Direct Stadium against Nantwich Town.

But the Wire will be kicking themselves as they led 2-0 with goals from Lewis Codling after 20 minutes and James McCarten 19 minutes later. And they held that lead until the final seven minutes of the game when the Dabbers hit them with three goals to turn the game on its head.

Sean Cooke scored the first and Curtis Jones equalised in the 88th minute – Cooke netting his and the Dabbers` third as injury-time set in.

Coalville Town, who also won promotion at the end of last season, were on the end of a 5-1 drubbing at The Meres by Grantham Town, who hadn`t won in six prior to the victory.

In a first half that probably saw Coalville as the better side without managing to make the most of their dominance, it was the Gingerbreads Harry Clifton who opened the scoring in the final minute of the half with a tremendous 25-yard strike.

It was almost 2-0 just a minute after the break when Danny Meadows fired home. Coalville helped the Gingerbreads increase their lead when Dean Freeman headed the ball into his own net in the 72nd minute and then Clifton made it 4-0 from outside the box.

The Ravens managed to pull one back through former Gingerbread Massiah Macdonald five minutes from time but on his debut for the Gingerbreads, former Banbury United striker Felipe Barcelos, made it a nap hand with a minute remaining.

Halesowen Town beat bottom-markers Ilkeston FC 2-1 at The Grove.

Kaiman Anderson proved to be the Yeltz`s hero on the night, bagging a brace in the 33rd and 70th minutes, rendering Anthony Dwyer`s stoppage time reply as just a consolation.

Matlock Town moved up to tenth by ending Frickley Athletic`s mini-revival under new boss Lee Morris, Dwayne Wiley scoring the only goal at Causeway Lane on the hour-mark.

The game between Stafford Rangers and Stourbridge ended goalless at Marston Road.

Chances were few and far between for both teams, with Stourbridge threatening more after Rangers were reduced to ten-men on the hour-mark after Mitchell Tolley was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Leon Broadhurst.
