Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

There are new leaders in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division after a fill fixture programme on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Full that is apart from the scheduled game at Silverlands between overnight leaders Buxton and Stafford Rangers, which became the first weather postponement of the season to date due to a waterlogged pitch.

The new leaders are Whitby Town, who won 1-0 at struggling Skelmersdale United`s Stormy Corner, courtesy of a 72nd minute penalty conversion from Dale Hopson. It`s been quite some turnaround by the Seasiders, who flirted with relegation for the majority of last season and ended up just two point above the drop zone.

North east rivals Blyth Spartans are second after winning 3-1 at Croft Park against an Ilkeston FC side who had won their previous three matches.

The crowd of 511 had to wait until the hour-mark to see their side take the lead through Matty Pattison, but only four minutes later to see Robbie Dale double it. Malechi Lavelle-Moore reduced the deficit 15 minutes from time, but Luke Armstrong made sure with Spartans` third in stoppage time.

Rushall Olympic missed the opportunity to take over as leaders when they were held to a 2-2 draw at Dales Lane by Warrington Town, who are now fifth.

The kick-off was delayed until 8.10pm due to traffic on the M6, and it seemed to affect the visitors as goals from Alex Reid and Jordan Fitzpatrick gave the Pics a 2-0 interval lead. However, the Wire produced a terrific comeback to equalise with goals in the final nine minutes from Conor Speed and Mike Grogan.

Hednesford Town dropped out of the top five after losing 2-0 at Kirkby Road against Barwell, Nigel Julian breaking the deadlock in the 82nd minute and then the highly-rated Brady Hickey making sure with a second in injury-time.

Mickleover Sports are seventh after winning 1-0 at Coles Lane against fourth-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town, thanks to a goal five minutes after half-time from Adam Baskerville.

They overtook Spennymoor Town and Ashton United, neither of whom managed a win on Tuesday.

On a very wet and windy night at The Meres, Grantham Town couldn't hold on to a lead and take a point against Spennymoor. Luther Wildin scored the only goal of the opening period to give the Gingerbreads the lead, only for Mark Anderson to equalise shortly after the break.

Felipe Barcelos restored the home side`s lead a few minutes later and when Lee Shaw made it 3-1 with only six minutes remaining, it looked all over for Moors. However, a Joe Tait spot-kick and then Andy Johnson scored in the final five minutes to earn the visitors a point.

Ashton lost 1-0 at Borough Park against mid-table Workington AFC, for whom Rob Wilson was the match-winner in the 13th minute.

Matlock Town and Nantwich Town both enjoyed good away wins.

The Gladiators won 3-0 at The Grove against Halesowen Town, with Marcus Dinanga bagging a brace in the 49th and 69th minutes and Marc Newsham adding the third goal with 6 minutes to go.

The Dabbers were 3-1 winners at the Marine Travel Arena against Marine AFC.

Josh Hancock gave the visitors a 21st minute lead from the spot, only for Kurt Sherlock to equalise, also from twelve yards, eight minutes later. But Hancock went on to complete his hat-trick with goals in the 54th and 69th minutes.

Coalville Town and Stourbridge shared a 2-2 Owen Street draw.

The Glassboys fell behind on 34 minutes with Callum Woodward netting from close range. But in a lively second period that saw chances at both ends, Stourbridge drew level after 65 minutes through Luke Benbow, whose 25-yard effort was his 10th goal in the league this season to date.
