Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Although Blyth Spartans only drew on Tuesday night, it could well be the point that seals the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division title as it came against second-placed Nantwich Town at the Weaver Stadium, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The draw means the Dabbers were unable to cut into Spartans` ten-point lead with games running out.

A crowd of 531 saw Luke Armstrong give the visitors a 33rd minute lead that Josh Hancock levelled within six minutes. Three minutes after half-time, John Johnston put the Dabbers in front, but a second for Armstrong just past the hour-mark earned the leaders a share of the spoils.

Spennymoor Town moved back into the top five after edging out Matlock Town by the odd goal in five at the Brewery Field.

A crowd of 503 saw Graeme Armstrong give Moors the boost of an early first-minute lead that Mark Anderson stretched in the 26th minute. Shane Henry then added a third with 10 minutes still to go to the break.

Matlock made the home fans sweat when they reduced the deficit to just one with two goals in two minutes just after the hour-mark from Cleveland Taylor and Niall McManus.

The fat lady has almost sung her final song for Skelmersdale United who are now 21 adrift of the safety-mark with only 21 left to play for after their 10-1 home humiliation by Ashton United.

A youthful Skem side were demolished at Stormy Corner, the avalanche of goals starting after just five minutes as a poor clearance was collected by Matty Chadwick who played in Josh Stachini to fire home his first goal for the club.

Chadwick picked up a loose ball and sped away from the two centre-backs before firing into the far corner 12 minutes later. With just another couple of minutes elapsed Chadwick turned provider as his cross from the byline saw Charlie Duke side foot home his opening goal for the Robins.

On the half-hour mark, a fine right wing cross from Dominic Smalley was headed home by Chadwick with Stephen Mason heading home the final goal before the break.

On the hour-mark, a through ball saw Chadwick round the keeper to complete his hat-trick and a minute later Chadwick registered another assist as Jack Dyche finished in off the post. With 20 minutes left sub Jody Banim`s left-foot finish made it 8-0 and 10 minutes later the joint-manager registered again from another long ball down the middle.

Skelmersdale never gave up and pulled a goal back through Nathan Randell and with three minutes left a sublime flick by Banim set Chadwick up to fire home his fourth goal.

A relegation `six-pointer` went the way of Marine AFC as they beat Corby Town 3-2 at the Marine Travel Arena.

Phil Trainer put the Steelmen into a 27th minute lead they held until skipper Danny Mitchley turned things around with two quick goals just after the break. Trainer levelled with seven minutes to go but the Steelmen were beaten when Alfons Fosa-Mensah hit an 88th minute winner.

The defeat means Corby sit just above the relegation zone on goal difference, while the Mariners moved four points clear ahead of a massive return fixture between the two teams at Steel Park on Saturday.

Mickleover Sports are looking nervously over their shoulders at the drop zone after they were beaten 1-0 at Marston Road by Stafford Rangers, Matt Bailey`s 35th minute effort proving to be enough to seal all three points for Rangers.

Coalville Town, however, moved eight points clear of the bottom four after a 5-2 win at Dales Lane against Rushall Olympic.

It was a staggering win for the Ravens who trailed to Gurjit Singh`s 16th minute penalty but led 2-1 at the break, courtesy of Nathan Watson`s spot-kick and an Anton Brown effort.

Massiah MacDonald made it 3-1 on the hour-mark and Nathan Freeman made it virtually game over when he added Coalville`s fourth eight minutes later. A Joe Hull own goal 11 minutes from time made it a nap hand for the visitors, with Aaron Forde netting a late second consolation for the Pics.
