Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Spennymoor Town, with eight games left, look to be the main challengers to EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division leaders Blyth Spartans after second-placed Nantwich Town were held to a draw on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The title is still very much in Blyth`s own hands, and three wins from their remaining six games will just about see them home.

Nantwich were held to a goalless draw at the Weaver Stadium by another of the play-off hopefuls, Matlock Town, who are now three points adrift of the top five.

They could have been further behind but for now fifth-placed Whitby Town being held at home and now sixth-placed Warrington Town losing at Cantilever Park to Spennymoor, Glen Taylor the Moors' hero with a brace in the 16th and 47th minutes.

Whitby were held to a 2-2 draw at the Turnbull Ground by mid-table Stafford Rangers, who now haven`t lost in five games.

Dale Hopson gave the Seasiders an 11th minute lead from the penalty spot, only for loanee Brian Barton to equalise within six minutes.

And then Kieran Morris looked to have won it for Rangers when he added a second with less than two minutes of the match remaining. But a minute later, Hopson remained cool to level with a second spot-kick to salvage what could turn out to be a vital point.

Buxton moved into seventh spot, just a point behind the top five, after a 2-0 home win over third-bottom Frickley Athletic.

The Bucks took the lead on 17 minutes when an unmarked Gregg Young headed home straight from a corner. And the hosts doubled their lead three minutes into the second period when Reece Fielding brought down Liam Hardy and the former Frickley loanee smashed home the resulting penalty.

Just as crucial a win on Tuesday night was Marine AFC`s 1-0 verdict at The Grove against fellow strugglers Halesowen Town.

Alfons Fosu-Mensah`s goal 10 minutes into the second half eventually proved enough for three vital points for the Mariners, who are now seven points clear of the drop zone, while the Yeltz dropped deeper towards trouble, just three points in front of fourth-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town.

Hednesford Town hammered another nail into second-bottom Ilkeston FC`s coffin as the Pitmen recorded a 3-1 win at Keys Park.

The strugglers took a 17th minute lead though through Tevahn Tyrell. But the home side hit the Robins with two goals just before half-time through Jordan Nadat and Stuart McNaught. Tom Thorley eventually killed Ilkeston off with a third 12 minutes from the end.

Barwell and Rushall Olympic, two teams level on points in mid-table, predictably shared the points at Kirkby Road.

Declan Towers broke the deadlock to give the home side the lead five minutes after the break but it lasted barely four minutes as Joe Hull pulled the Pics level.
