Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Tuesday was a busy night in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League#s Premier Division, with several vital games taking place ahead of the busy Easter period, writes Pitchereo's Steve Whitney.

Spennymoor Town consolidated second spot after winning 2-0 at Stormy Corner against already-relegated Skelmersdale United.

The high-flying visitors couldn`t make the breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes but took only three minutes of the second half to score, courtesy of Chris Mason. And a nervy victory was confirmed two minutes from time when Glen Taylor added the Moors` second.

Spennymoor are now six points clear of a now sixth-placed Buxton side who lost 2-0 at Borough Park against fellow tip five chasers Workington AFC.

The Reds moved to within a point of the Bucks in a top five race that looks like going right to the wire, thanks to goals from David Symington after 65 minutes and Josh Calvert 11 minutes from time.

Whitby Town moved back into the top five at Buxton`s expense after winning 1-0 at a Mickleover Sports` side who had won their previous two games. The Seasiders left it very late – Dale Hopson`s goal coming in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Grantham Town are level on points with Workington after a 2-1 win at Owen Street against Coalville Town.

The Gingerbreads went in front on 25 minutes. Luke Shaw cut in on the left, squared the ball across the goal and Luther Wildin was there to slot home. After Massiah McDonald was sent off, the ten-man Coalville equalised on 51 minutes when Danny Jenno fired home a free-kick.

But on 65 minutes, the visitors were back in front, Lee Shaw setting up Jeremiah Dasalou to fire into the roof of the net. Then, 70 minutes, the Gingerbreads had the chance to go further in front when Lee Shaw was pulled down in the box but Luke Shaw`s spot-kick ended up over the bar.

At the other end of the table, Marine AFC picked up a point from a 1-1 draw at Dales Lane against mid-table Rushall Olympic.

The Mariners are now eight points clear of the drop zone, with only nine points left to play for. They were in front after 18 minutes through Danny Mitchley but the Pics earned a point with a Joe Hull leveller 11 minutes from time.

Halesowen Town are safe after a goalless draw at already-doomed Ilkeston FC.

Tuesday`s only game with little riding on it apart from pride and final placings saw Ashton United beat Stafford Rangers 2-1 at Hurst Cross with goals from Mark Lees after 38 minutes and Matty Chadwick on 55 minutes – Tyler Little replying three minutes from time.
