Tuesday's Premier Division review

By David Watters

Relegated Hednesford Town, Workington AFC, Buxton and Marine AFC all made it two wins from the opening two games of the new EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division season, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Pitmen won at Stourbridge on Monday night and they were followed on Tuesday night by the Reds, 2-0 Borough Park winners over Frickley Athletic, the Bucks, 1-0 winners at The Meres against Grantham Town, and the Mariners, who saw off Blyth Spartans 1-0 at home.

Josh Calvert broke the deadlock to give Workington a 71st minute lead that Rob Wilson doubled in stoppage time to ensure victory and condemn Frickley to a second successive defeat.

Nick Walker scored Buxton`s match-winner at Grantham right on the stroke of half-time, while Danny Mitchley`s 82nd minute effort proved enough for Marine.

Over half the division are yet to record a win, while promoted Spennymoor Town and Rushall Olympic both recorded their first victories.

The Moors saw off fellow promotees Warrington Town 4-1 at the Brewery Field with Dave Dowson after 23 minutes and Tom Craddock on 37 minutes, giving them a 2-0 interval cushion. Graeme Armstrong then bagged a brace for the hosts either side of a Ged Kinsella reply for the Wire on 76 minutes.

Rushall won 2-0 at Mickleover Sports, who had won their opener, Alex Reid bagging both the Pics goals after 43 and 75 minutes.

If early results are any guide, then this looks like being a very tight division, with no less than five matches ending all-square.

Veteran Steve Jones pulled Nantwich Town level in the 57th minute at Hurst Cross against Ashton United, whose Lee Gaskell had made it three goals in two games with the opener three minutes after the break.

Massiah McDonald put newly-promoted Coalville Town in front after 28 minutes at Owen Street against Sutton Coldfield Town, only for Joe Lyng to equalised just before the half-time whistle.

Fellow promotees Stafford Rangers led through Izak Reid`s 35th minute goal but visiting Barwell grabbed a last-gasp 90th minute equaliser through Joe Ballinger.

Relegated Corby Town took a 23rd minute lead at The Grove against Halesowen Town but had to settle for a second draw when Ethan Delaney levelled right on half-time.

And Dan Burns put Skelmersdale United ahead at Causeway Lane against Matlock Town, whose Laurie Wilson pulled the Gladiators back on terms on the hour-mark.
