Tuesday's Premier Division review

By David Watters

Only Grantham Town and Stafford Rangers have managed two wins from the opening two games of the new EVO-STIK League Premier season, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Tuesday night saw Grantham win at Rushall Olympic and Stafford beat Sutton Coldfield Town at Marston Road, pictured.

At Dales Lane, Lee Shaw gave the Gingerbreads the lead right on the stoke of half-time. And on 71 minutes, Shaw killed off the Pics – who also lost their opening game – with his and the visitors` third.

A crowd of 614 saw Stafford ease to a 4-1 win against Sutton Coldfield, who had beaten Shaw Lane last Saturday.

The only goal of the first half came three minutes before the interval through Jack Langston. Ten minutes after the half-time cuppas and Danny Westwood doubled Rangers` lead.

Langston scored his second and the home side`s third on the hour-mark, with Aaron Birch reducing the deficit 13 minutes from time. Mat Bailey then made it 4-1 with less than two minutes remaining.

In contrast, joining Rushall in still looking for their first points of the new campaign are Buxton and Coalville Town as well as Shaw Lane, who lost on Monday night.

A goal two minutes from time condemned Buxton to defeat at Wincham Park against newly-promoted Witton Albion, while a 15th minute Jordan Archer effort sealed Coalville`s fate at Owen Street against Stourbridge.

Relegated Altrincham picked up their first point from a 1-1 draw at the Weaver Stadium against a Nantwich Town side doing likewise.

A crowd of 670 saw David Forbes` 31st minute opener for the Dabbers finally cancelled out by Johnny Johnston`s 86th minute penalty.

Whitby Town, Marine AFC, Halesowen Town and Matlock Town also managed to record their first wins.

The Seasiders saw off relegated Stalybridge Celtic, who had beaten Nantwich on the opening day, 4-1 at the Turnbull Ground with Kieran Weledji giving them a 10th minute lead that Aaron Burns levelled 11 minutes later.

Three minutes after the break, Dave Carson restored Whitby's lead and an 83rd minute Alex Honeyball own goal killed the visitors` off, with Carson adding his second and the hosts` fourth in stoppage time.

The Mariners beat a Workington AFC outfit who had also won their opener, Will Smart giving Marine a 49th minute breakthrough that Adam Hughes added to just past the hour-mark.

The Yeltz – beaten at Workington last Saturday – had a stoppage time Luke Shearer goal to thank for their 1-0 win at the Grove against Barwell, who had won at home to Whitby last weekend.

The Gladiators edged out Hednesford Town by the odd goal in five at home, taking an early fifth minute lead through Shaun Harrad.

The Pitmen were level within five minutes through a Joe Doyle-Charles own goal, only for Rhys Sharpe to restore Matlock`s lead from the spot on 23 minutes. James Lawrie equalised just before half-time, but Harrad`s second with 12 minutes remaining sealed the Gladiators` win.

Newly-promoted Lancaster City remain unbeaten after a last-gasp 2-2 draw at the Giant Axe against another side who won their opener, Warrington Town.

The Wire led through Ruben Jerome`s 12th minute effort until the 66th minute when Gavin Clark equalised. But Josh Hine restored Warrington`s lead 10 minutes from time, only for Clark to level matters in stoppage time.

The game between Ashton United and newly-promoted Farsley Celtic, who also won last weekend, ended 1-1 with Max Cartwright`s 68th minute opener for the home side being cancelled out 13 minutes from time by James Walshaw.
