Tuesday's South Division review

By David Watters

With a couple of games being played on Monday and two more on Wednesday night, it was a reduced fixture list in the EVO-STIK League South on Tuesday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

However, it saw newly-promoted Cleethorpes Town and Spalding United join Monday's winners Basford United in recording two wins from the opening two matches.

Cleethorpes, Northern Counties East League champions and Buildbase FA Vase runners-up, won 2-1 at relegated Frickley Athletic, who had won their opener.

Steve Hopewell had given Frickley the lead two minutes after the break but a Danny North penalty on 71 minutes and then Laurence McKay 10 minutes later sealed the visitors` win.

The Tulips beat another opening day victor, Corby Town, 2-1 at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields.

Gary King put the hosts ahead just before the interval and two minutes after it, Matt Varley doubled their lead. David Bell`s side reduced the deficit through Ollie Brown-Hill 13 minutes from time but the Steelmen weren`t able to find a leveller.

First time winners on Tuesday were Stamford AFC, who followed up their opening day draw with a 1-0 win over a Carlton Town side who had won last Saturday – John King`s 81st minute strike proving decisive.

The remaining four matches were all draws, Bedworth United and Newcastle Town both getting off the mark with a 0-0 draw at the Oval, as did Leek Town and Belper Town at Harrison Park.

Elsewhere, Gresley FC also recorded a first point in a 1-1 draw at the Moat against newcomers Alvechurch. The visitors came back from conceding an early fourth minute Matt Melbourne effort to level through David Bellis after 19 minutes.

Sheffield FC are also off the nil-point mark as they shared a 2-2 draw at home to Loughborough Dynamo, who had started positively last weekend.

Andy Gascoigne bagged a brace for Club, including a first minute opener, with Danny Quinn and Sam Thorpe replying.
