Tuesday's South Division action review

By David Watters

With Basford United already up and champions-elect, the race is on for the second automatic promotion spot in the EVO-STIK League South, with second-placed Alvechurch firmly in the driving seat, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Alvechurch, who could still mathematically catch Basford, are looking to ensure they finish second and a late winner in a 3-2 win at Lye Meadow against Carlton Town saw them move three points clear in second.

It didn`t look good for Church though as they trailed 2-0 to goals either side of half-time from Mamoke Akaunu and Tyler Blake. Josh March reduced the arrears in the 76th minute and five minutes later, the home side were level through Nathaniel Waite. And then with just two minutes remaining, Church were awarded a penalty after Darol Lucas brought down Babucar Suane and Tom Turton converted the resulting spot-kick.

Frickley Athletic are fourth, a point behind Bedworth and four adrift of Alvechurch and they will be ruing the loss of three points for administrative errors after they won 3-1 at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields against Spalding United.

After trailing to a 28th minute Jonathan Lockie effort, the Blues were awarded a 56th minute spot-kick reprieved which Tom Dugdale converted. Six minutes later, Sam Liversidge put the visitors in front and then top scorer Jacob Hazel made the points safe for Frickley with a third in stoppage time.

Chasetown returned to the top six after winning 3-1 at home to bottom-markers Market Drayton Town.

And this was yet another game where the losers led, this time after just six minutes through Andy Hartlebury. And they held that lead until the 78th minute when Will Whieldon levelled and the Scholars took the lead three minutes from time, thanks to Nick Wellecomme, with Jack Langston ensuring the points stayed at home with a third in time added on.

Third-bottom Gresley FC picked up a late point from a 3-2 draw at The Moat against Stocksbridge Park Steels.

The Moatmen led through Pearson Mawnyongo`s 7th minute spot-kick and then led 2-0, thanks to Matt Melbourne. Brodie Litchfield pulled one back for Steels six minutes before the break and a Mark Branch own goal restored parity 16 minutes from time. Richard Stirrup then put Steels in front for the first time with seven minutes to go, only for Branch to make amends with a goal five minutes from time.
