Vaughan gets Cup fever

Trafford boss Garry Vaughan is admitting he's gripped by FA Cup fever as he dreams of emulating the exploits of his old pal Karl Marginson, the FC United of Manchester manager, writes Ben Collins.

Trafford are now the lowest ranked Greater Manchester club in the competition after beating Spennymoor Town 5-3 last Saturday to reach the Third Qualifying Round.

The high-flying Evo-Stik NPL North side have only got this far once before and have been drawn at home to Evo-Stik NPL Premier leaders Marine next Saturday.

Vaughan, who partnered Marginson in the Salford City midfield for four years and saw him lead FC United on a money-spinning FA Cup run that ended with a Second Round Replay defeat to Brighton, happily admits that he’s been gripped by Cup despite his side's great progress in the league this season.

The Trafford manager can't wait for the chance to get past Marine and take another step towards the First Round. "The place is buzzing," he said. "The main thing is that would have been great to get FC United. Margy’s my drinking partner and I used to manage their reserves with Loz Greenhalgh.

"We have a small budget at Trafford, so a good Cup run could set us up for years. You just have to look at what it did for FC. It still gives me goose pimples thinking about what they did. It was great to see them get that far and be live on TV.

"To do something like that he can really hold his head high and I know the fans love him to pieces. It’s a dream for me to do the same with Trafford. When I saw my mate Margy with Brighton's Gus Poyet after the game I just had to ring him ands his phone went off on national TV!"
