Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South

First half goals from Corey Nightingale and Josh Thornton earned Carlton Town a 2-0 win over Romulus in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's First Division South at Stoke Lane on Wednesday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In what was at times a scrappy affair, Nightingale opened the scoring after nine minutes with a free header from a Dean Gent free-kick. It was the defender's first goal since joining Carlton from Hucknall Town earlier this season.

Romulus gradually fought their way back into the game with the lively Dexter Ravenhill causing problems for the home side, but it was Carlton who doubled their lead on 38 minutes - and what a goal it was.

Gent and Thornton combined to knock the ball forward to Ruben Wiggins-Thomas and when the striker laid the ball back to Thornton he hit a screamer from fully 30 yards that gave Lewis Exall in the Romulus goal no chance.

Martin Ball hit the crossbar in the second half as Carlton looked to secure the win before Romulus missed some chances of their own, notably Aaron Williams who put a gilt-edged chance over the bar.

And when the visitors finally got the ball past Martin Kearney in the final minute of stoppage time, the post came to Carlton's rescue.

The win moves the Millers up to ninth in the table.
