Carlton Town dropped into the relegation zone after a 3-1 home defeat by fellow strugglers Rugby Town – Valley`s first away win of the season to date.
The visitors took the lead on 37 minutes when David Kolodynski fired home from close range after one of several new Rugby signings on duty, Kevin Thornton, had his shot blocked.
Thornton, the ex-Coventry City midfielder, was instrumental in Rugby's impressive display and he doubled the lead from the penalty spot on 64 minutes after Kieron Walker fouled another newcomer, Jake Healy. Healy added the third goal nine minutes later, rounding off a fine move and firing into the top corner.
Carlton fought back in the closing minutes and Walker headed home a Tom McConway corner with two minutes remaining but it was too little too late.
Kidsgrove Athletic moved up to tenth in the table after making it four successive league victories against bottom-markers Tividale.
Former Stafford Rangers striker Nick Wellecomme opened the scoring seven minutes before half-time. He added number two after 66 minutes and 10 minutes later it was game over when Dan Skelton made it 3-0.
Anthony Malbon rounded off a good evening`s work by Peter Ward`s side with the fourth a minute from the end of normal time.
