Ringside call for fighting fan!

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Ashton United are urging their fans to support 'one of their own' when Robins fanatic Jon 'Two Smokes' Kays climbs into the ring to go into battle for the European Super-Featherweight Championship title.

A regular on the terraces at Hurst Cross and ranked a reputable 14th out of 61 in the super featherweight division, the 32-year-old is going toe-to-toe with Adrian Gonzalez at the Manchester Arena on Saturday 10 October, hours after the Robins return from what they hope will be a victory at AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the FA Cup.

The former English champion, pictured, boasts an impressive record of 21 wins, a single draw and four defeats since making his debut in 2007.

The WBO World Lightweight Championship fight between Terry Flanagan and Diego Magdaleno is taking centre stage on Saturday week and Kays reckons his fellow fans at the Premier Division club can look forward to "some awesome entertainment and a good scrap" if they take the advice to be there after their cup adventure.

In the build-up to the fight, Kay told the Robins website: "I’ve been training hard and I’m just looking forward to the fight now. I have been a fan of the club since I was about five-years-old and fortunately have been managing to go games constantly for about 12 months now.

"I like to get down and have a couple of pints when I can but obviously with my training I am turning down the pints and pies and having a coffee instead! It takes my mind off the boxing though and I always enjoy going to matches and checking the scores on my phone when I can’t make it."

The boxer still harbours high hopes for the Robins on the pitch this season despite only seeing four wins so far from their 11 outings.

He added: "It has obviously been a bit hit and miss so far this season but they’re probably just finding their feet. My greatest memory of being a fan is getting to the play-offs last season and there is no reason that can’t be replicated this season."
