Wednesday's First North action review

Evo-Stik NPL First Division North

There were three games in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's First Division North on Wednesday night and it produced a 'first' for this season – a league win on the same day by both Ossett clubs, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Ossett Albion, who had won only once this season to date and sat bottom of the table, gained a precious three points with a battling performance at Dimple Wells against mid-table Mossley AFC.

Albion attacked strongly from the whistle and got a lucky break when Mossley keeper Russ Saunders failed to hold a long-range shot and Dale Kelly was on hand to slot the ball into the net. This was in the first minute of the match and Albion didn't sit back but kept pressing to try and increase their lead.

But the strong wind made it difficult for both teams and it was always going to be decided by mistakes or misjudgements. Mossley came out in a more determined mood in the second half and Adam Rhodes in the Albion goal performed heroics to keep a clean sheet.

Town travelled across the Pennines to Moor Lane to take on Salford City and also got off to a good start when Ryan Qualter put them in front after just six minutes. Dan Browne equalised six minutes before half-time but Shaun Connor scored what proved to be the winner for Ossett in the 57th minute.

Wednesday's other game saw Padiham edge out visiting Wakefield by the odd goal in seven.

The Storks raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from Ashley Carter after 12 minutes, Kieron Pickup on 23 and Ben Allen 11 minutes later. Rob Bordman reduced the arrears shortly before the break and then Ferdinand Annor pulled a second back for the Bears just past the hour-mark.

But Martin Parkes made it 4-2 with 15 minutes remaining, only for Bordman to score his second and Wakefield's third less than a minute later. Despite that, Padiham's defence held firm after that to earn victory.
