Wednesday's league action review

EVO-STIK League

There were three matches in the EVO-STIK League on Wednesday night – one in each division, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Premier Division encounter between mid-table sides Whitby Town and Workington AFC at the Turnbull Ground ended goalless to leave both clubs locked on seventeen points, although the Reds have played a game less.

In First Division North, bottom-markers Padiham picked up only their fifth point of the campaign to date when a last-gasp equaliser earned them a 2-2 home draw with another mid-table outfit in Ossett Town.

Calum Hepworth gave Town an 18th minute lead that Craig Haynes cancelled out right on the stroke of half-time. Dan Chambers restored the visitors` advantage on 65 minutes and as they entered injury-time, that looked like being the winner. But James Jenkins popped up to salvage a point for the Storks in the third minute of time added on.

The team propping up First Division South, Kidsgrove Athletic, were also in action when they made the short trip to Harrison Park to take on promotion-chasing neighbours Leek Town.

And in front of a crowd of 205, the struggling visitors, who have won only once to date, took an eighth minute lead when Leek keeper Ryan Price's clearance hit Chris Smith and rebounded into the back of the net. The home side poured forward in search of an equaliser, which finally came eight minutes before half-time when Ashley Jackson stabbed home Andy Kinsey's cross from inside the six-yard box.

Leek had three goals disallowed for offside and Liam Shotton twice hit the bar, but they finally took the lead in the 67th minute when, after good work from Jordan Johnson, Shotton poked the ball home from close range. The killer third goal arrived 15 minutes from time with Shotton scoring his second with a fine effort that went in off the post.

The win takes Leek back into the top five, seven points behind leaders Sutton Coldfield Town, having played two games less.
