Wednesday's Premier Division action review

Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division

Marine moved to the top of the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division table on Wednesday night after a 4-2 win at Hurst Cross against an Ashton United side who could have taken over top spot had they won, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Mariners hit their hosts with two goals in the opening 16 minutes from Andy Fowler and Nick Rogan. Astley Mulholland reduced the arrears on 36 minutes but the visitors restored their two-goal lead immediately after the restart through Jon Goulding. Aaron Burns got Danny Johnson's side back in it again four minutes later but Marine made sure when Thomas Moore added a fourth in the last minute.

There were two other games on Wednesday and both produced excellent results for struggling sides.

Whitby Town moved off the basement after winning for the first time this season against Grantham Town at the Turnbull Ground. Nathan Mulligan was the Seasiders' hero, bagging a brace in the 22nd and 70th minutes – the second from the penalty spot.

Wednesday night's reduced fixture list due also saw Eastwood Town earn only a second win of the campaign and a seventh point after edging out Worksop Town at Sandy Lane by the odd goal in five.

The Tigers had won their previous three games, so were in buoyant mood, going two up through Matt Young on 10 minutes and Leon Mettam 13 minutes later. But the battling Badgers fought back and two goals in a minute from Romaine Graham and Tyeisse Nightingale and then a goal right on half-time from Greg Simmons eventually proved enough for the spoils.
