Wednesday's Premier Division action review

Evo-Stik NPL Premier Divison

Worksop Town moved into sixth place in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division on Wednesday night with an 8-1 hammering of managerless Blyth Spartans at Sandy Lane, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Blyth's heaviest defeat in ten years came after last Saturday's 4-2 home win over Frickley Athletic, but maybe it could have been a lot different had Joe Kendrick not seen his penalty saved by Worksop's veteran keeper Paul Bastock after only three minutes had gone on the clock.

Just three minutes later the Tigers were ahead through big Tom Denton. Adrian Hawes doubled the home side's lead just three minutes later after that and it was 3-0 with only 13 minutes gone on the clock, Leon Mettam the scorer.

Carl Jones reduced the arrears five minutes later and Spartans fans in the 305 crowd looked to Arsenal's comeback at Reading 24 hours earlier for inspiration. However, by half-time Spartans were 5-1 down after Owain Warlow's brace in the 29th and 32nd minute.

There was to be no Gunners-type comeback though as the Tigers added further goals from Hawes on 49 minutes and then Mettam and Lee Beeson in the final seven minutes.

In the other game on Wednesday night, Ashton United were looking to move into second spot with a victory over neighbouring FC United of Manchester at Hurst Cross.

But a slightly disappointing crowd of 503 saw a Matthew Wolfenden brace in the first 20 minutes eventually win it for FC United. Aaron Burns did manage to reduce the deficit seven minutes after half-time from the penalty spot, but the visitors held on to move into eleventh place in the table.
