West Preview: It's "El Staffico"

By James Gordon

New EVO-STIK League West Division leaders Atherton Collieries welcome struggling Kendal Town this weekend.

Colls took advantage of Radcliffe’s slip last week to take over at the summit, and they’ll go in to this match as heavy favourites against the Cumbrians, who have managed just three wins all season and are second from bottom in the table.

Radcliffe will be wanting to bounce back when they welcome Mossley, who are the form team in the division with five wins in their last six.

Boro haven’t lost at home since September though, and Tunde Owolabi has scored 11 goals in his last nine games.

It’s “El Staffico” at the Novus Stadium as Kidsgrove Athletic host Leek Town, in a game which will be subject to a pitch inspection due to the weather.

Leek have quietly been going about their work this season and sit in the play-off places, with games in hand on teams above them, and are unbeaten since November.

Grove boss Ryan Austin told the local press: “It’s going to be a great occasion, both teams have a lot in common, a lot of the players have been at both clubs so it adds a little spice to the occasion.

“It’s a derby match, so my players are well aware what is expected of them. I don’t think I will have to say too much before the game, the occasion should be enough.

"Time and again we have dominated teams, but just haven’t been able to find the back of the net. Strangely enough we seem to do better against good teams and we will be facing one tomorrow in Leek Town.

“People keep telling me we are in a false position, but the table doesn’t lie. We are where we are because we have not won enough games.”

Ramsbottom United return to league action after their magnificent FA Trophy victory over Weymouth in midweek, and they travel to lowly Glossop North End.

It’s a return to an old stomping ground for Rams boss Chris Willcock, who reached Wembley and secured promotion during his stint at Glossop.

Willcock is yet to taste defeat away from home since taking over as Ramsbottom manager, and will be hoping that run continues to keep up their play-off aspirations.

Another club with play-off aspirations are Colne, and they welcome Market Drayton Town this weekend looking for another three points.

Somewhat unusually, Colne have claimed the majority of their points away from home, losing just once on their travels, while Market Drayton have lost eight of their 12 games on the road.

Colwyn Bay will once again kick-off the EVO-STIK League weekend at 1pm when they host Trafford.

They are still having issues with their floodlights, and both clubs and the league have agreed to once again bring kick-off forward to ensure the fixture is played.

Skelmersdale United’s desperate search for points continues against Chasetown at Volair Park.

George Donnelly’s last minute penalty earned only a ninth point of the season in a draw against Newcastle Town last weekend, and Skem fans will be hoping this is the weekend that they end their winless home run.

Clitheroe are now nine games without a win and they will look to end that run with a trip to Newcastle Town, having drawn their last two games.

Newcastle’s squad has been bolstered by the return of striker Jordan Cole, who previously finished as the league’s top goal scorer.

Widnes’ frustrating wait to return to their home stadium continues, and they once again play on the road at Barnton, this time welcoming Droylsden.
