West Round-up: Colls pull clear

By James Gordon

Atherton Collieries passed a real test of their title credentials in the EVO-STIK League West Division as they won 2-0 away at Mossley.

Both sides had won 19 points in their last seven games and were the form teams in the division.

Ian Rowlands’ header put Colls in front after 52 minutes and Ben Hardcastle’s 15th goal of the season, a shot that went through ‘keeper Josh Ollerenshaw, earned a fine three points to move Colls six points clear at the top.

The chasing pack continue to falter, with Runcorn Linnets dropping two points on a tough trip to Leek Town.

Paul Shanley’s volley put the Linnets ahead after just eight minutes, but Leek equalised by half time through top scorer Aaron Bott.

That draw meant Leek dropped out of the play-off places in favour of Ramsbottom United, who plundered six past bottom side Skelmersdale.

Nic Evangelinos and Jamie Rainford both scores braces for the second successive weekend, and there were also goals for Iyrwah Gooden and Ruben Jerome.

Radcliffe remain third despite a third game without a win. Louis Myers put them in front 15 minutes from time away at Prescot Cables, but they were denied maximum points by Michael Monaghan’s last minute penalty.

Goalkeeping coach John Birt took charge of Chasetown, with their management team handed a one-match stadium ban, and it was a job well done as they brushed Colwyn Bay aside 3-0.

Liam Kirton scored once in either half, before Thomas Hill made sure on 74 minutes.

Ben Hodkinson struck a late winner as Widnes broke Clitheroe hearts with a 3-2 win in injury time.

Kev Towey had put the visitors ahead in the first minute and Hodkinson’s first put Widnes 2-0 up at half time.

But Max Hazeldine’s brace inside seven second half minutes looked to have rescued a much needed point for the hosts, before Hodkinson’s late show.

Play-off chasing Trafford and Colne played out a goalless draw at Shawe View, while Market Drayton Town drew 2-2 at home to Glossop North End.

Glynn Coney gave Market Drayton a half-time lead, but within seven minutes of the restart they found themselves 2-1 down thanks to goals from Dominic Marie and Jack O’Leary.

Ryan McLean’s equaliser secured only their second point in their last nine outings.

Droylsden picked up their third win in five as they continue to move away from the bottom places.

Michael Brewster scored two goals in three minutes midway through the first half to give them control, and though Jordan Cole pulled one back for opponents Newcastle Town with eight minutes to play, Luke Daly made sure of a 3-1 win four minutes later.

The other game in the division, between Kendal Town and Kidsgrove Athletic, was abandoned at half time with Grove leading 3-1.
