West Round-up: Promotion chasers slip up

By James Gordon

The push for promotion from the EVO-STIK League West Division tightened up over the weekend as the top two both lost.

Leaders Atherton Collieries were beaten 2-1 at home by Colne, who came from a goal down thanks to goals in the final quarter by Josh Hine and Alex Curran.

That lifts them on to 51 points in 7th place, level with Leek Town and Ramsbottom United above them.

Colls retained their four point lead at the top as nearest rivals Runcorn Linnets were thumped 5-0 at Kidsgrove Athletic.

Anthony Malbon scored a hat-trick with Chris Budrys and Kyle Diskin adding the others.

That meant Linnets slipped to third, with Radcliffe leapfrogging them on goal difference after their 2-1 win over Droylsden.

Kingsley Williams and Ben Wharton put them in control, before Domaine Rouse’s late consolation.

Mossley scored a dramatic late winner to consolidate their play-off spot, beating Prescot Cables 2-1.

Adam Jones and Matthew Hamilton exchanged goals, before Dylan Fitzgerald scored the winner in injury time to send Cables to a defeat that leaves them four points off the play-off picture.

Leek Town slipped to fifth as they were beaten 3-1 at home to Trafford, with Liam Ellis scoring twice for the visitors.

Ramsbottom United suffered their second successive defeat as they went down 1-0 at home to Widnes.

Widnes had lost four in a row before this one, but won the points thanks to Ben Hodkinson’s second half strike.

At the bottom, Kendal Town recorded only their second home win all season, beating Market Drayton Town 3-2.

Daniel Keenan gave them the lead on the half hour mark, but Jordan Davies and James Jennings had turned it around by the break.

But second half goals from Aaron Helliwell and Ryan Moore help to boost the Mintcakes survival chances.

Their nearest rivals are now Clitheroe, who suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Chasetown.

Glossop North End leapfrogged Clitheroe thanks to their 3-0 win at doomed Skelmersdale United.

Elsewhere, Tom McCready’s late winner settled a seven goal thriller in Colwyn Bay’s favour away at Newcastle Town.

Newcastle had led 3-0 after 55 minutes thanks to Jordan Cole’s brace, but the Welshmen staged a remarkable turnaround.

McCready scored a hat-trick and Daniel Andrews scored the other.
