West Round-up: Skem off the bottom

By James Gordon

Saturday saw Evo-Stik League Division West leaders Runcorn Linnets beaten and Lancastrian rivals Atherton Collieries and Colne both hit four without reply on their travels.

Linnets lost 2-1 at Valerie Park to a now third-placed Prescot Cables side.

A terrific crowd of 743 saw a thriller in which Dan O'Brien put the visitors in front after less than 2 minutes had elapsed on the clock.

But on 14 minutes, Linnets lost Freddie Potter to a straight red card for retaliation.

And then on 43 minutes, Michael Simpson also had an early shower to leave the visitors to play the entire second half with only nine-men and all-square after Chris Almond converted the resulting penalty.

They held out until 11 minutes from time when Mike Monaghan won it for Cables.

Atherton's four-goal haul came at Parkside against a now third-bottom Kendal Town.

First half goals from Ben Hardcastle and Vinnie Bailey were added to by Jordan Cover and a late Connor Gaul penalty.

Colne's four without reply came at Market Drayton Town, although it was 0-0 at the break.

Alex Curran broke the deadlock immediately after the restart and then Connor Hughes doubled the visitors' lead 5 minutes later.

Matt Morgan on 65 minutes and Brad Lynch 4 minutes later firmly settled the game in Colne's favour.

Mossley AFC are fourth but were held to a 1-1 draw by neighbours Radcliffe FC at Seel Park.

In front of a crowd of 333, Richard Smith's 12th minute opener for Boro was eventually cancelled out by Adam Jones 18 minutes from time.

Skelmersdale United moved off the bottom of the table after picking up a point from a 2-2 draw at fellow strugglers Chasetown, while Glossop North End dropped to the foot of the table after losing 2-0 at Ramsbottom United.

Skem came back from two-down against the Scholars, whose Ryan Wynter after 35 minutes and Matt Hardiman on 57 minutes were on the mark.

Sean Yeldrum 2 minutes later and a Wynter own goal on 68 minutes gave the visitors a point.

Recent recruit Nialle Rodney after just 7 minutes and Joel Bembo-Leta on 72 minutes scored for Rammy at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium to see off Glossop.

It finished goalless at Shaw View between Trafford and Colwyn Bay, while Droylsden found their shooting boots as they hammered Widnes 6-2 at the Butcher's Arms.

Three goals in the opening 15 minutes from Fabian Brandy with two and Sefton Gonzales gave the Bloods a great cushion.

And Liam Caddick and Domaine Rouse stretched that lead to an amazing 5-0 with still only 31 minutes gone on the clock!

Shaquille Antoine-Clarke's own goal just before half-time pulled one back for Widnes and 2 minutes after the break, Ben Hodkinson reduced the deficit again, but they were unable to pull off a miraculous comeback and Michael Brewster added a sixth for the hosts in time added on.

Clitheroe and Newcastle Town shared a 1-1 draw at Shawbridge.

Max Hazeldine broke the deadlock to give the home side a 68th minute lead that George Shaw levelled with 3 minutes remaining.
