West Round-up: Teams take advantage of draws at the top

By James Gordon

Runcorn Linnets missed out on the chance to close the gap behind leaders Atherton Collieries in the EVO-STIK League West Division table on Saturday.

With Colls held 1-1 by play-off chasers Prescot Cables, the Linnets were also held to a draw, 2-2 by Mossley, a result that saw Mossley themselves drop out of the play-off places.

James McCulloch and Thomas Bentham exchanged first half goals at Volair Park, while at Linnets, Max Leonard’s brace came either side of Runcorn’s two goals, scored by Paul Shanley and Kurt Sherlock.

Those results were good news for Radcliffe, who put their indifferent run of form behind them to beat struggling Glossop North End 3-1.

Aaron Burns, Scott Metcalfe and Tunde Owolabi scored the goals that move them within three points of second placed Linnets.

Leek Town jumped up to fourth with a 2-0 win at Widnes, who have lost their last four games.

Rob Stevenson gave them a first half lead and Aaron Bott made sure of the points just a minute in to the second half.

Ramsbottom United moved in to the play-off places with a 4-0 win over Trafford.

Now free of their heroic FA Trophy achievements, the Rams are pushing for promotion and won the game with two goals in either half - the prolific Nic Evangelinos, Tom Kennedy, Jamie Rainford and Kieran Lugsden sending the hosts to a third straight defeat.

Colwyn Bay plundered a remarkable nine goals past bottom side Skelmersdale United, winning 9-0.

Tom McCready, James Barrigan and Daniel Andrews all bagged braces, with further goals from Ashley Woods, Ethan Devine and Astley Mulholland as Skem lost for the 21st time this season.

Kendal Town remain in the bottom two after a 3-1 defeat at Colne. Brad Lynch, Oliver Wood and Mamadou Djabi scored the goals for the hosts.

Chasetown won a mid-table battle over Newcastle Town, winning 5-0 with four goals coming after the break.

Jack Langston scored two penalties inside five second half minutes, to add to earlier goals through James Askey and Ryan Wynter, before Daniel Cocks rounded things off late on.

Elsewhere, Droylsden recorded their third win in five, an 87th minute winner from Shaquille Antoine-Clarke helping them to beat Clitheroe 1-0.
