Wilson: Cup heroes turned around our season

Ilkeston FC manager Kevin Wilson has paid tribute to his cup heroes after they lifted the Derbyshire Senior Cup to complete the turnaround of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier club’s campaign.

Little more than a month ago, the Robins were in serious danger of relegation but three wins and a draw from the final Premier Division fixtures saw them finish 10 points clear of the drop zone.

After securing their top fight status, Wilson’s men were worthy winners of Tuesday night's county cup final, pictured, at Alfreton’s Impact Arena after easing to a 2-0 victory over Glossop North End.

A delighted Wilson said: "The lads deserve a lot of credit for the way in which they’ve turned things around and I’m delighted for everyone that we’ve managed to top off the season by retaining the senior cup.

"It’s been very noticeable over the past few weeks how the youngsters have grown into the challenge and that’s incredibly encouraging for the future. But by the same token, we cannot underestimate the part played by the more senior players like Joe Maguire, Laurie Wilson and James Reid."

The North West Counties League Premier Division underdogs more than held their own after a goalless first half before the game changed three minutes after the break when veteran striker Gary Ricketts was brought down in the box for a clear-cut penalty.

Glossop `keeper Greg Hall pushed away skipper Laurie Wilson's spot-kick but Kane Richards swept home the rebound. James Reid made it 2-0 from a second spot-kick less than ten minutes later, this time at the first attempt.

Wilson added: "Glossop worked hard and they were a threat at times but overall, our game management was very good. People might say it is only a local cup final but we’ve retained the Derbyshire Senior Cup and that’s an achievement for everyone to feel proud about. That’s for the people of Ilkeston - not just our regular supporters.

"The events of the past month have put us back on track but we cannot ignore the periods of the season that were not so good. Everyone has made mistakes - me included - and we need to reflect on these over the next few weeks and make sure we learn from them. Having said that, there’s a lot to be pleased about."
