Winning penalty seals teen's switch

Matlock Town manager Dave Hoole has added former Chesterfield midfielder Jack Brownell to his squad for the upcoming EVO-STIK League season after the teen star showed he can keep cool under pressure.

After bringing 22-year-old former Chesterfield, Handsworth Parramore, Mickleover Sports, Rainworth, Sheffield Wednesday and Worksop Town midfielder Charlie Dawes back to the club at the weekend for a third spell, former Spireite Brownell put pen-to-paper on Tuesday night after turning out in every match of the club's pre-season programme and impressing the Gladiators boss.

The teenager, pictured, scored the winning penalty in a shoot-out against Belper Town in the Caroline Melbourne Memorial Cup on Saturday as the Gladiators lifted their first silverware of season 2018-19.

Brownell, 19, joined Chesterfield at U16 level and signed his first professional contract with the club in April 2017. He went on to make one senior appearance in League One and arrived at the Proctors Cars Stadium after being released this summer.
