Woodhouse returns to managerial ring

Curtis Woodhouse was named as the new manager of Goole AFC on Monday morning after David Holdsworth left the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League’s Vikings.

The former Sheffield FC manager and professional boxer had been working alongside Holdsworth as assistant manager following the pair’s appointment in October by new Chairman Baron Bloom.

Former Mansfield and Lincoln boss Holdsworth left the First Division South club’s Victoria Pleasure Grounds on Sunday after their 3-0 home defeat to title-chasing Coalville Town at the weekend.

Woodhouse, the former Sheffield United and Birmingham City midfielder, is set for the last fight of his boxing career in the middle of next month when he takes on Darren Hamilton for the British light-welterweight title on 22 February.

The 33-year-old, pictured, said: "I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to be back in full time management. It came as a bit of a surprise with a good friend of mine David leaving but as one door closes in football another one opens. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in."

In a statement confirming their managerial shake-up, the Vikings thanked Holdsworth for his work at the club and backed his successor.

Goole AFC Chairman Bloom said: "We leave as friends, it’s just a parting of the ways and I’m very happy to have worked together. I'm delighted to offer Curtis the job, he knows the league inside out. We hope his appointment will bring success to The Vikings. His knowledge of the game is second to none and he has my full support."
