Workington boss hails fan response

As if being relegated wasn’t enough, Workington have had to deal with the fall out over the collapse of their stadium plans.

Volunteers have worked hard to ensure Borough Park is up to scratch, with the plan previously to have been to groundshare with rugby league neighbours Workington Town.

Manager Danny Grainger is keen to repay that hard work with a win when Pickering Town are the visitors on the opening day of the BetVictor Northern Premier N/West season.

He said: “I have been very pleased with the attitude the lads have shown during pre-season. Training and games have used to implement our style of play and how we want play throughout the season.

“I have been delighted with the reaction since the stadium decision was announced, everyone pulling together to make sure Borough Park is in peak condition ready for Saturday.

“When the new stadium fell through, we were left in limbo a bit and that’s when we needed our fans to step-up and they have.

“They’ve really gone to town. Tidying up the stadium, painting walls, taking weeds out – they’ve done everything.

“The work has been nothing less than marvellous. It’s great for us to see and hopefully, we can do the business on the pitch for them.

“We are hopefully going to repay all the volunteers, directors, helpers who have put in numerous hours over summer with three points on Saturday v Pickering.”

The Reds left themselves with too much to do in the second half of the season, and they were eventually relegated with a whimper.

They moved quickly to instate Grainger, who will make his competitive debut as Reds boss this weekend.
