Wrens ready for return to action

Rainworth Miners Welfare manager Kevin Gee is doing his best to ignore the weather and keep his Wrens squad fit for a return to action, writes Gordon Foster.

With Rainworth's planned trip to Lincoln on Saturday postponed along with all but one fixture in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, Gee says he’s getting over his frustration by taking any chances he can to work with his squad.

Gee explained the lengths he's been going to already with his Evo-Stik NPL First Division South squad in recent weeks.

He said: "We've managed to get indoors at Garibaldi College and the River Maun Sports Centre at Ravensdale to do some spinning, circuit work and a running session, which is not ideal, but it is still important that we keep the basic fitness levels up while we undergo the unforced break.

"On the up side, the break has enabled us to get the whole squad, even though a small one, back to full fitness, and with a number of seven days being put in and, of course, also being received, there may be a bit of movement both ways once we resume our league programme. We'll just have to see how that develops over the coming week."

Gee, who's now keeping his fingers crossed that Tuesday’s trip to Eastwood Town in the Doodson Sport Cup beats the weather, confirmed this week that defender Lee Cooksey has returned to Sheffield two years after signing for the Wrens.

* The Wrens’ Nott Senior Cup Third Round tie at Central Midlands outfit Newark Town has been brought forward 24 hours to Tuesday 5 February to avoid clashing with with England's televised international against Brazil the Wednesday.
