Young goalkeeper joins Atherton Collieries

Atherton Collieries have signed Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Owen Mooney on a short-term loan deal.

The 18-year old has already gained some Northern Premier League experience, making 25 appearances for Newcastle Town as well as 13 for Runcorn Linnets.

He has also featured 14 times for the Latics’ U21s side this season.

Mooney gained a reputation for saving penalties during his time with Newcastle Town, and also reached the Pitching In NPL West Division play-off final with Linnets during the last campaign.

He will provide cover while regular number one Nico Defreitas-Hansen recovers from a minor injury.

The young keeper kept a clean sheet on debut against West Didsbury & Chorlton in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy on Tuesday night.
