Cup kings book annual get together

By David Watters

Atherton Collieries manager Michael Clegg is looking forward to seeing his Integro League Cup winners bonding with fans at their annual 'Jolly Boys' friendly for the upcoming 2018-19 EVO-STIK League season.

Clegg and his squad are getting together with supporters on Saturday 11 August when they head to EVO-STIK League newboys Pontefract Collieries for the inaugural running of 'The Colliery Cup'.

After the fixture against the Northern Counties East League champions and the rest of the club's pre-season campaign was confirmed this weekend Clegg said: “Pontefract had a really good season last year, so it will be a good footballing test for both sides.

"We always like to use the ‘Jolly Boys’ fixture as an opportunity for some club and team bonding, and after the game the plan will be to stay up there for a few hours, have a few beers and integrate the new lads into the squad whilst mixing with the fans.”

“It’s been a success each year, and every year it seems to get better, it’s always a day of preseason we look forward to!”

Clegg also named 'Players’ Player of the Year' Danny Lafferty as his captain for next season following the departure of departure of Brad Cooke. Pictured with new vice-captain Vinny Bailey, Lafferty made his Colls debut back in 2009 before returning in 2016 from Radcliffe Borough to help Colls win the North West Counties Premier League.

Lafferty led Colls when they beat Coalville Town in the Integro League Cup and Clegg added: “It was an easy decision for Danny to be captain and Vinny to be vice-captain. Danny has captained us several times so it’s nothing new to him.

"He is a natural leader within the squad, he has a great relationship with the staff and he is as committed as they come. If you asked any squad member, who is the first person you would take to battle with you, it would be Laff, a hundred percent.”
