Flying start to public poll of legends

By David Watters

Nearly five hundred votes for the EVO-STIK League's star team and top one hundred players of all time were registered within twenty four hours of the public poll opening!

The online vote to mark the Northern Premier League's 50th anniversary season stood at 482 registered votes on Wednesday evening before breaking through the 500 milestone a few hours later as fans, players and officials flocked to pick the Northern Premier League’s 'Top 100 Players' and 'Team of all Time' from the last five decades.

After opening at 7pm on Tuesday, the statistics from the first day of polling saw five votes cast for every player on the shortlist of 200 with 89 per cent of the respondents who successfully completed the voting process taking an average of seven minutes to pick their favourites from an original cast of nearly 2,000 nominations from the public and clubs, past and present.

Perhaps surprisingly in the age of Twitter and social media, voters registered their choices almost equally between the EVO-STIK League's official website and Facebook and Twitter pages. A pen pix guide to the club legends set to be whittled down to 100 from nearly 2,000 original nominations and set to be included in the first history of the Northern Premier League, was added on Wednesday to help voters make their choices ahead of 7pm polling deadline on Friday 22 December.

Entitled '50 Glorious Seasons - A History of the Northern Premier League 1968-2018', the book is being penned by official historian and statistician Dominic McKenzie and will be out within weeks of the 2017-18 anniversary campaign ending after the players are unveiled next April at the 2018 Player of the Year Awards in Barnsley and then honoured in June at the NPL's end of season awards night in Blackpool.
