Gingerbreads on bounce back mission

Grantham Town

Grantham's joint manager Jimmy Albans is determined to see his side return home from one of their longest trips of the season with their first win in five league games under their belts.

The Gingerbreads travel to Whitby Town in the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division on Wednesday night with Albans calling on them to bounce back from Saturday's surprise 2-1 defeat by struggling Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Grantham dominated the game at the weekend, but could not claw their way back from a two goal half time deficit and Albans refused to be critical of his players.

He said: "We have just had a five game unbeaten run in the league. We will look to build another now. How can I criticise that performance?

"We did everything we could. We created chance after chance after chance against a side who defended in such numbers that their keeper's clearances were going to our back line with no Stocksbridge player in our half!"

Conceding goals regularly has been the key to recent games with Grantham averaging two goals past them in recent games. As Albans insisted, at this level, that is something Grantham have got to change.

He said: "We can’t afford to give sides two goals at this level and expect to be getting something out of the game. Sides at this level, no matter where they are in the league table are too good to allow that."

Albans says he and fellow joint manager Wayne Hallcro want their side to put the result from Saturday behind them and play with the same style and verve at Whitby that they showed against Stocksbridge.

Albans is convinced that is the key to getting three points and added: "When players have got to work and then travel, it becomes a logistical nightmare. But we will get everyone there somehow, set up to do what we do and hopefully come back with the points."
