Ilkeston in Watson coup

Ilkeston Town have pulled off a coup by signing striker Nat Watson from Basford United.

Watson, 29, has scored 72 goals in the past three seasons and the club say they have beaten off competition from several National League North clubs to sign the prolific marksman.

Robins head of football Mark Clifford said: “Watson was a key target for us a long time ago and get him over the line is really pleasing.

“The squad is really taking shape and the newly-released additions give us goals, experience and will certainly entertain the Ilson fans.”

Watson joined Basford in 2018 for an undisclosed club record fee from Coalville Town and has been named in the NPL Team of the Year three times.

He was not part of Basford boss Steve Chettle’s plans for the new season, despite scoring 11 goals in 24 starts last term.

Ilkeston manager Martin Carruthers added:  “Nat is not just a great player, you only have to look at his stats to see this, but he is also a great lad. He will fit right in with the group that we have retained and brought in.”
