Local MP goes into battle for Skem

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper stepped into the battle to save the 135-year-old club on Tuesday after the owners of the West Lancashire College Stadium told stunned officials that they would not be renewing or extending their current lease at the end of the season within 48 hours of the club's relegation from the EVO-STIK NPL's top flight on Saturday.

Responding to the news that Skelmersdale United's future is under threat with no security of tenure in place on their home, the MP said: "I was extremely shocked and disappointed to learn that Skelmersdale United FC's future hangs in the balance over being unable to reach agreement on renewing its lease at Stormy Corner.

"Having been to matches at the club and from the messages I am receiving from constituents, it is evident how much this football club means to its supporters. Many people have volunteered their time over many years to keep the club running. There is no doubt if the club had to close the gates it would be a massive blow for so many people and the community of Skelmersdale of which it has been a part since 1882.

"I have spoken to the club chairman and have sought to make contact with the landlord of the ground in an attempt to find a positive resolution that will see Skelmersdale United still playing Non-League football next season.

"I am also in contact with EVO-STIK [Northern Premier] League, the FA and am raising the issue with ministers at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as I explore all avenues to help Skelmersdale United's survival."

Skelmersdale United chairman Paul Griffiths urged fans to get behind efforts to save the Amateur Cup winners after the shock decision by the owners of their home at the URETEK Stadium.

Ahead of the club's trip to Halesowen Town on Saturday, he said: “We have been trying for almost two years to reach an agreement to remain in business at our stadium but the owners of the site, Chequer Properties, have refused to grant an official new lease or extension.

"Without this we will be thrown out of the league and the history of this great community club may be lost forever. We would appreciate support and help from anyone to resolve this matter and keep Amateur Cup winners Skelmersdale United alive and well for the West Lancashire community. This closure would be tragedy for Skelmersdale United, its fans and the wider community.”
