Matlock keep top assist maker

Byrne has made over 100 appearances for the Gladiators since arriving at the club just before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He has also played for Warrington Town, Buxton, Gainsborough Trinity, Shaw Lane, Northwich Victoria and Winsford.

Byrne made 45 appearances for the club this season, and was the top assist maker in the last two seasons. He also pitched in with nine goals.

Gladiators manager Martin Carruthers is glad to keep a key player at the Giants Causeway.

"For me it was a no-brainer to retain Alex,” he said. “He’s been pivotal in our play-off push and has adapted his role to feature in numerous positions, all while being a key player for us throughout our time here.

“He’s a fantastic lad and we want him to be part of our promotion push next season.”
