Pitmen ready to defy big freeze

Hednesford Town

Hednesford Town boss Rob Smith is talking up the character of his title-chasing squad ahead of a hectic run-in, writes Chris Brewerton.

The Pitmen's task has been eased by the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's decision to extend the season by a week after the return of freezing weather again decimated fixtures and their manager reckons his over-stretched squad can keep up the pressure on leaders North Ferriby United regardless of what the weather throws at them in the coming days.

Hednesford aren't the worst affected side in the division but also have Staffordshire Senior Cup and Birmingham Senior Cup finals to play before May 4.

Smith, whose side are at home to Buxton on Easter Saturday and away to Rushall on Easter Monday, is unfazed and defiant in the face of further possible fixture chaos should those games fall victim to the weather.

He said: "The lads have proved this season that they can cope with anything put in front of them. It is a testing time for everyone but we will utilise the squad to its maximum to keep the players fresh, aim to cement our playoff place and then anything after that is a bonus.'

Supporters planning to attend Saturday's home game or travelling to Monday's derby are advised to keep checking www.hednesfordtownfc.com and the league's website for the latest information on pitch inspections.
