Poppy takes pride of place for proud Spartans

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Blyth Spartans have added a poppy to their famous green and white kit to pay tribute to the armed forces during Sunday's FA Cup clash with Altrincham.

With the FA Cup First Round clash coinciding with Remembrance Sunday, the Premier Division club unveiled the specially tailored kit after training on Thursday night in the build-up to the game at Croft Park which was put back 24 hours to feature with seven others on BBC TV throughout the afternoon.

Spartans defender Danny Parker and midfielder Matthew Wade are pictured modelling the strip with the logo of the Royal British Legion and a poppy taking pride of place on the front and the words 'Lest we forget 1914-2014' on the back to honour the one hundred year anniversary of the First World War, a conflict that saw the North East club lose a number of players in battle.

Proud Spartans manager Tom Wade said: "It’s a massive gesture from the club and we shouldn’t forget that Blyth Spartans lost players during the First World War. We shouldn’t forget the brave men and women who are serving now so we are honouring them as much as we are remembering those who are no longer with us.

"We have to thank Colin Baxter who has worked hard with the Royal British Legion and of course we have to thank them as well. Michael Wilson from MWS, our kit suppliers, has worked especially hard to help us and it’s a huge thanks to him too."
