Saturday's First North action review

By David Watters

Lancaster City maintained their nine-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North table following Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Dolly Blues beat play-off chasing Scarborough Athletic 2-0 at the Giant Axe with goals from Jordan Connerton after 20 and 45 minutes.

Farsley Celtic are second, but possess three games in hand on Lancaster.

They also played another top five pretender in Clitheroe at Shawbridge and won 3-1 with goals from James Walshaw, who hit two in the 26th and 65th minutes, and Ryan Watson, Kurt Willoughby scoring an 81st minute consolation for the Blues nine minutes from time.

Trafford in third are a further two points back but won comfortably 3-0 at the Butcher`s Arms against Droylsden, Lee Neville, Kingsley Williams and Ashley Woods the Trafford marksmen.

Colne moved into the top five at Clitheroe`s expense after beating fourth-placed Ossett Town 2-1 at home.

New signing Adam Morning marked his debut with the opening goal for Colne nine minutes after half-time. Oliver Wood added the Lancastrians second 15 minutes from time, with Town scoring a last-gasp consolation from Nathan Curtis.

Glossop North End missed the chance to go level on points with Colne when they suffered a surprise 4-2 home defeat to lowly Radcliffe Borough.

Boro led through Dan Burns` goal on the half-hour mark but the second half produced five more goals, with Adam Jones equalising for the Hillmen on 57 minutes and then Jack Hindle and Elliot Rokka netting to put the visitors 3-1 ahead with 11 minutes to go.

Mike Norton threatened a late comeback when he reduced the deficit to one with three minutes left to go, only for Hindle to pop up with his second and Boro`s fourth a minute later.

One defeat in eight has lifted Ramsbottom United to within four points of the top five and Max Hazeldine maintained that run with a 53rd minute winner at Irongate against Bamber Bridge.

Brighouse Town are a point and a place behind Rammy but will be disappointed to have dropped two home points to rock-bottom Burscough, whose Adam Gilchrist cancelled out Adam Baker`s 19th minute opener for the hosts with 14 minutes to go.

Second-bottom Goole AFC also enjoyed a good day, winning 1-0 at Seel Park against a now fourth-bottom Mossley AFC, courtesy of a Bobby Johnson effort after 56 minutes.

The Vikings still trail third-bottom Prescot Cables by six points however, despite Cables` 3-0 defeat at Dimple Wells to Ossett Albion, whose Rob Bordman bagged a brace either side of a 41st minute Ross Hardaker goal.

Elsewhere, Colwyn Bay and Tadcaster Albion shared a goalless draw at Llanelian Road, while Hyde United beat Kendal Town 3-0 at Ewen Fields with goals from Laurence Bell and Matty Beadle in the opening seven minutes and then Beadle again nine minutes from time.
