Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

After knocking Nantwich Town out of the FA Trophy on Saturday it turned out to be good day for leaders Shaw Lane who saw the other challengers in EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South come unstuck, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Second-placed Newcastle Town were inactive but third-placed Spalding United were beaten 1-0 at Basford United, whose Fabian Smith scored the winner on 76 minutes.

Chasetown moved into fourth place after they also won 1-0 at Coles Lane against Romulus, courtesy of a 44th minute James Dance effort.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds missed the opportunity to move into the top five when they were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Market Drayton Town in front of 404 at the Dog & Duck.

Nabil Shariff gave Diamonds the boost of a penalty lead right on half-time but James O`Neill equalised just past the hour-mark.

Second-bottom Carlton Town thought they`d earned three crucial points at home to Northwich Victoria when they led 2-1 through the returning Alex Troke after 14 minutes and then Will Mellors-Blair on 87 minutes.

But Godwin Abadaki levelled just before half-time and Matt Clarke popped up with Vics` equaliser in stoppage time.

Chris Birchall did likewise for Kidsgrove Athletic at Sheffield FC after Club had led through Lee Cooksey`s 32nd minute goal.

And another late goal, this time from veteran Iyseden Christie, prevented Leek Town from moving level on points with fifth-placed Witton Albion after Jordan Johnson had given the hosts a 51st minute lead.

The day's other game saw Stamford AFC move up to 16th in the table after a 3-2 win at The Moat against Gresley FC.

Leandro Browne bagged a brace for the Moatmen, only to see Grant Ryan, Curtis Hartley and an 89th minute John King effort win it for the Daniels.
