Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Whitby Town`s lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division table was cut to just one point on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Seasiders dropped points after being held to a goalless draw by fourth-bottom Ilkeston FC at the New Manor Ground.

Buxton moved into second place after beating the team who started the day in that spot, Rushall Olympic.

Bradley Grayson gave the Bucks a great start with a goal inside the opening minute at Silverlands. Nick Walker eventually doubled the hosts lead on the hour-mark, with Grayson`s second 12 minutes from time settling matters.

Frickley Athletic moved out of the drop zone after a 2-1 win The Grove against Halesowen Town.

Noel Burdett gave the Blues the lead right on half-time. Kaiman Anderson equalised seven minutes after the break but Nathan Valentine popped up with Frickley`s winner in stoppage time.

Fifth-placed Hednesford Town were also beaten at home by the same scoreline by another of the strugglers, Coalville Town.

It wasn`t until the 67th minute that Massiah McDonald broke the deadlock to give the Ravens the lead. Ashley Sammons looked as though he`s earned the Pitmen a point with an 84th minute equaliser but Lee Torr grabbed a 90th minute winner for the visitors.

Bottom-markers Corby Town are in danger of being cast adrift after losing 2-0 at Steel Park against Barwell.

Former Steelman Callum Ball after 16 minutes and Brady Hickey five minutes after half-time were the Canaries` scorers to leave the Steelmen nine points behind now fifth-bottom Frickley.

Second-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town were also beaten, 2-1 at Cantilever Park by a Warrington Town side who are now seventh.

Lewis Codling bagged a brace for the Wire after nine and 57 minutes, with Dan Callaghan replying 10 minutes from time.

Spennymoor Town missed the chance to move into the top five when they were beaten 2-1 at the Brewery Field by Ashton United, for whom Jack Dorney after 63 minutes and Lee Gaskell 12 minutes later, overturned Joe Tait`s 58th minute opener for the hosts.

The biggest winners of the day were Stourbridge, who warmed up for next Sunday's Emirates FA Cup tie against Northampton Town with a first half demolition job on shell-shocked visitors Workington AFC, who could also have moved into the top five with a win.

Stourbridge came flying out of the blocks to quickly knock their in-form Cumbrian opponents out of their stride. Five goals in the opening 27 minutes from Luke Benbow with two, including a penalty, Jordan Archer, Jack Duggan and Kayelden Brown as good as sealed the win with barely a third of the contest played.

Saturday`s other game saw third-bottom Skelmersdale United pick up a useful point from a 1-1 draw at The Meres against Grantham Town, whose Tom Batchelor cancelled out Chad Whyte`s 56th minute opener for Skem with eight minutes remaining.
