Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Shaw Lane AFC maintained their six-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table on Saturday by delivering a 5-1 drubbing to Carlton Town on their own patch, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

It was 3-0 to the leaders at the break, courtesy of goals from Kieran Lugsden after five minutes, Alex Byrne 20 minutes later and Spencer Harris five minutes before the interval. Gavin Allott added a fourth on 64 minutes and, after a consolation from Kieran Walker in the 85th minute, Gary Burnett made it a nap hand for the visitors in stoppage time.

Spalding United remain second, although they have played three games more than the leaders, after edging out Chasetown 2-1 at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.

Josh Ruff gave the Scholars a 28th minute lead but a Lee Beeson brace of penalties in the 36th and 68th minutes sealed the Tulips win.

Witton Albion, who have a massive seven games in hand on Spalding, are third after winning 2-1 at Basford United, coming back from a Kieran Wells fifth minute goal down to win, courtesy of Scott Lycett after 12 minutes and Rob Hopley after 32 minutes.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds moved into fourth place after they won 4-0 at the Dog & Duck against third-bottom Loughborough Dynamo and Newcastle Town lost 1-0 at home against Sheffield FC, who are now eighth and only two points behind their hosts.

A crowd of 461 saw Joe Curtis bag a brace in the second and 21st minutes and Tom Lorraine make it virtually game over by the 25th minute. Dynamo battled hard though and after Diamonds took their foot off the pedal they only managed to add a Carl Sibson own goal to their tally eight minutes from the end.

Leek Town`s hopes of getting back into the top five were dashed at the Oval where Bedworth United won 2-1, thanks to a Jack Jeys brace in the 47th minute from the spot and then in stoppage time at the end of the game – all after Jordan Johnson had given Leek a 40th minute lead.

It`s win one, lose one at the moment for Stamford AFC and Saturday saw them go down to a 1-0 Zeeco Stadium defeat to Belper Town whose Jonathan Williams scored the only goal just before half-time.

Market Drayton Town are another in need of points just to ensure they don`t get dragged into a fight at the bottom end near the end of the season and they achieved that with a 2-1 home win over Gresley FC.

Matt Melbourne put the visitors in front after just nine minutes but Andre James equalised on the half-hour mark before Shaquille Leachman-Whittingham won it for the Shropshire side with a 41st minute second.

Kidsgrove Athletic are now tenth and five unbeaten after winning 3-2 at Ashby Avenue against Lincoln United.

Anthony Malbon`s 11th minute spot-kick had `Grove in front although Andy Toyne equalised three minutes later. Marc Grocott after 25 minutes and Malbon again right on half-time stretched the visitors` lead that United could only cut by one through an 83rd minute penalty from Danny Brooks.
