Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Rushall Olympic, who have a game in midweek, could head into Christmas with a very healthy eight-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division table, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Saturday`s 2-1 win at Stormy Corner against second-bottom Skelmersdale United sees the Pics lead by five points although they left it very late after leading through Jazz Luckie`s 34th minute opener.

Skem grabbed what looked like being a valuable point when Chris Almond levelled from the penalty spot with only four minutes remaining. But Joe Hull grabbed a Pics` winner a minute into stoppage time.

Second-placed Buxton could only manage a 1-1 draw at fourth-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town, whose Danny O`Callaghan put them in front from the spot after just two minutes at Coles Lane. Brad Grayson pulled the Bucks back on level terms seven minutes after half-time.

Blyth Spartans skipped into third place after both Whitby Town and Hednesford Town suffered defeats.

Spartans beat Barwell 2-0 at Croft Park with a brace of spot-kicks from Matt Pattison.

Pattison netted the opener in the 25th minute after Robbie Dale was fouled in the area by Declan Towers. And a foul on Daniel Maguire by Peter Castle gave Pattison the chance to double his and Spartans` tally in the 68th minute.

Whitby suffered a 2-1 defeat at Causeway Lane against Matlock Town, whose Alex Pursehouse after 76 minutes and Marcus Dinanga a minute from time, bounced back after Adam Gell had given the Seasiders a 27th minute lead.

And Hednesford suffered a 4-1 defeat at The Meres by Grantham Town.

And that after Dan Brennan had given the Pitmen a 22nd minute lead. Danny Meadows equalised in the 36th minute and two minutes later, Lee Shaw put the Gingerbreads in front. Two goals in three minutes midway through the second half from Jeremiah Dasalou and Shaw again sealed the hosts` win.

Sixth-placed Spennymoor Town weren`t able to take full advantage after being held to a 1-1 draw at Stourbridge.

But it looked as though Mark Anderson`s goal on the hour-mark was going to win it for Moors, until Drew Canavan popped up with the Glassboys equaliser seven minutes into stoppage time!

Nantwich Town`s hopes of pushing towards the top five was halted by fog at the Weaver Stadium as their game against Frickley Athletic was abandoned four minutes into the second half.

Warrington Town`s home game with Stafford Rangers suffered a similar fate, being called off 12 minutes into the second half.

Corby Town`s woes continue as they suffered a 3-1 Steel Park loss to Workington AFC.

Joe McGee gave the Reds a 14th minute lead that Stefan Moore cancelled out on the hour-mark. But goals from Elliot Newby after 81 minutes and then Scott Allison two minutes into time added on at the end of the game sealed the visitors` win.

The result leaves the Steelmen staring back-to-back relegations firmly in the face, being twelve points adrift of the safety-mark.

Third-bottom Ilkeston FC who, like Corby, weren`t really expected to be struggling so badly this season, remain third-bottom after losing 2-1 at the New Manor Ground to Marine AFC.

Kurt Sherlock gave the Mariners a 34th minute lead that Luis Rose levelled just before the break. However, Warren Bellew`s 68th minute second for the visitors proved to be the winner.

Coalville Town pushed Halesowen Town closer to the drop zone with a 3-1 Owen Street win in which Kaiman Anderson gave the visitors a 20th minute lead.

Massiah McDonald equalised six minutes later and then two goals in three minutes midway through the second half from Ryan Robbins and Alex Dean sealed the Ravens` win.

Connor Hall helped himself to an early Christmas present by netting a hat-trick for Mickleover Sports in their 4-1 home win against Ashton United.

And all that after Ashton led through Lee Gaskell`s 13th minute opener. Hall scored in the 39th, 40th and 67th minutes, with Adam Baskerville adding the other seven minutes from time.
